Knowing oneself comes from attending with compassionate curiosity to what is happening within -Dr Gabor Maté
I am an integrative therapeutic counsellor and a member of the BACP. I believe counselling is an open, curious, fluid exploration of our inner world and the largest part of what makes therapy successful is the relationship. I believe in cultivating a compassionate, creative, empathetic space filled with depth and connection. As Stephen Porges says ‘Safety isn’t the absence of threat but the presence of connection’. That connection is key to me in the therapeutic relationship and my aim is to hold people in the uncertainty and vulnerability of their emotions as we collaboratively work towards healing and wholeness.
I like to think of the therapeutic process as an archaeological excavation back to the true meaning of ourselves. We have literally and figuratively been buried by layer upon layer of the past (both our own and other peoples). Sometimes we need a giant axe or shovel to dig through the defences and self destructive patterns and other times a small feather light brush to dust off the past decay that has built up on parts of us that are so fragile we didn’t even know they were there. As we piece things back together we work towards healing, creating space in our lives to live to our potential.
My own experiences influence how I work and I understand that may not be for everyone. The path we chose to take back to ourselves will differ along the way, if this doesn’t feel right for you I urge you not to give up, there are many types of mental health help available both traditional and holistic and whatever one you choose is a step in a direction towards healing, there is no right or wrong and sometimes it is about putting one foot in front of the other until the direction becomes clearer.
